Part 32: Dropping Databases and Schemas Safely

Dropping a database or schema permanently destroys all tables, indexes, and data within it.

1. Safe Deletion Syntax

-- The IF EXISTS clause prevents script errors if the object does not exist:
DROP SCHEMA IF EXISTS staging_data CASCADE;

DROP DATABASE IF EXISTS devify_testing;

⚠️ DANGER: CASCADE recursively deletes every table, view, and foreign key constraint belonging to that schema. Never execute DROP ... CASCADE without verified backups!

Key Takeaways

  • Always use IF EXISTS in automated migration and teardown scripts.
  • Exercise extreme caution with CASCADE.
