Today's Weather: IMD Issues Red Alert for 5 Kerala Districts, Thunderstorms Expected in Delhi blog
Red, orange, and yellow advisories have been issued for a number of districts in Kerala due to the IMD's prediction of significant rainfall until June 18. Malappuram and Kozhikode are under a red alert, and fishing is prohibited along the coast due to squally weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red, orange, and yellow alerts for several districts in Kerala due to the forecast of widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall until June 18.

📢 IMD Declares Red Alert in Kerala

  • With extremely heavy rainfall (more than 200 mm in a 24-hour period) predicted through June 16–18, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five northern districts: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
  • The region is experiencing ongoing, heavy rain due to an upper-air cyclonic circulation and ongoing monsoon activity, which is reflected in the alert.

🟠 Orange & 🟡 Yellow Alerts

  • Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad are under orange alerts (extremely heavy rain: 110–200 mm), which will progressively spread to neighbouring districts on June 17–18.
  • On June 16, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha are under yellow alerts (heavy rain: 65–115 mm); on June 17–19, this coverage expands to encompass Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur.

🌊 Coastal & Fishermen Warnings

  • Sea waves might reach 3–3.4 m, and strong surface winds of 40–60 km/h are anticipated.
  • Fishermen are advised by IMD to stay on land and stay out of coastal waters until at least June 18.

🌧️ Real-World Impacts

  • Floods and mudslides have resulted in three recorded deaths and two reported missing; drowning instances have happened in Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, and Kannur, and one person is still missing in Kozhikode.
  • In Kasaragod, an 8-year-old kid drowned in a flooded stream.
  • Life in the red-alert districts has been disturbed by flooding, landslides, uprooted trees, and inundated roadways (timesofindia.indiatimes.com).
  • Kasaragod has opened relief camps, and those in danger—particularly those living along the shore and in areas prone to flooding—are being evacuated
  • At least 8–11 districts experienced the closure of schools, colleges, Anganwadis, Madrasas, and tuition centres, which lasted until June 17–18.

🔮 Forecast & Precautions

  • Rainfall that is heavy to extremely heavy is predicted to continue until at least June 18.

IMD advises-

  • Steer clear of unnecessary travel, particularly in low-lying areas and hills that are prone to landslides.
  • Take immediate cover indoors, away from trees, rivers, and sloping terrain.
  • Keep an eye out for any updates regarding dams or possible evacuations.
  • During storms, unplug electrical devices and stay out of trees.

IMD predicts rain in Delhi today

Rain is expected in Delhi on Tuesday, according to IMD. A partly overcast sky with light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds between 40 and 50 kmph—temporarily reaching 60 kmph during the evening or night—is what the weather predicts for the city.
