July 5, 2025 - In a tweet on his social media platform, X, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk formally announced the formation of a new political party, the America Party, on July 5, 2025. Musk expressed his increasing dissatisfaction with the American political system when he said that the goal of starting this party is "to give you back your freedom." The choice was made just one day after he asked users in a public poll on X if he should form a new political party. Musk was encouraged to proceed by the enormous response, with over 1.2 million participants voting in support of the plan, or roughly 65%.

Musk expressed his disapproval of what he called America's "one-party system" in his announcement, saying that he believes the country's financial stability and individual liberties are under danger due to the growing support for large government spending by both Democrats and Republicans. Musk wants to provide an alternative political voice that emphasizes individual liberty, minimal government, and fiscal prudence through the America Party. He stated unequivocally that the goal of this new party is to upend the current political order and provide voters with an alternative to the conventional two-party system.
Having contributed more than $250 million to Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, Elon Musk was formerly a fervent Trump fan. In keeping with their tight relationship and Musk's influence in Trump's administration, he was even given the position of head of a federal agency called the "Department of Government Efficiency." But on July 4, 2025, when Trump signed the "Big Beautiful Bill," a large spending bill, into law, their relationship took a drastic turn.
Musk severely referred to the plan as a sort of "debt slavery" and publicly denounced it, claiming that it would significantly raise the U.S. deficit by trillions of dollars. He said that the law violated the principles of limited government and encouraged reckless spending. Despite Musk's long history and commercial accomplishments to the United States, Trump retaliated by threatening to stop providing federal subsidies to his businesses and even raising the prospect of deporting him. A turning point was reached as a result of this public backlash, which encouraged Musk to start his own political movement with the newly established America Party.
Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!

Should we create the America Party?
Based on the ideas of fiscal conservatism, the recently formed America Party supports stricter federal budgets, a more compact and effective government, and the reduction of wasteful spending. According to Elon Musk, the party would first seek to win 8–10 seats in the House of Representatives and 2-3 seats in the U.S. Senate as part of its planned and targeted entry into American politics. The objective is to become a strong swing vote that can influence important legislative choices and hold both main parties accountable, rather than attempting to control the entire system.
Political observers have cautioned, meanwhile, that starting a third party in the US is a very challenging undertaking. The requirements for political parties to be listed on election ballots vary by state; some involve obtaining hundreds of thousands of verifiable signatures, while others require a certain proportion of votes from prior elections. These rules frequently result in drawn-out and expensive court cases.
Experts warn that establishing nationwide ballot access is a multi-year endeavor that requires not only significant funding but also extensive organizational structure, legal resources, and public engagement, despite Musk being one of the wealthiest people in the world with an estimated net worth of over $350 billion. Despite having enormous financial resources and international clout, the America Party nevertheless faces several institutional and procedural obstacles on its path.
