early Sunday, U.S. Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites blog

Hours after appearing to imply that the US was still hesitant about its assistance in Israel's operation against Iran's nuclear program, US President Donald Trump declared early Sunday that the US has launched a "successful attack" on the Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites in Iran.

Following more than a week of Israeli assaults on Iran that have aimed to destroy its air defenses and offensive missile capabilities and damage its nuclear enrichment facilities, the US decided to actively enter the conflict. Iran has fired dozens of ballistic missiles at Israel in retaliation.

Trump said on Truth Social that "a full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordo," a reference to the hard-to-demolish underground location that has been described as the most crucial component of the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

He wrote, "All aircraft have now left Iran's airspace… safely returning home." "We are proud of our outstanding American warriors. No other military in the world could have accomplished this.

U.S. Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites-

  • In coordination with continuing Israeli operations, U.S. forces conducted attacks on three Iranian nuclear sites on June 21, 2025: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
  • Submarines launched about 30 Tomahawk missiles at Natanz and Isfahan, and stealth B-2 bombers dropped several huge bunker-buster bombs (GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators) at Fordow and Natanz.
  • The locations were "completely and totally obliterated," according to President Trump, who also praised the raid as a "spectacular military success" and threatened additional strikes if Iran did not pursue peace.

There have been strong international reactions to the recent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear installations. The attacks were hailed by Israel as momentous and in line with its own previous military operations. Iran, in sharp contrast, denounced the strikes as a breach of international law and vowed to proceed with its nuclear program in spite of the damage caused. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the action might escalate tensions in the region and called it a "dangerous escalation." The United States' reaction, meantime, has been rather split: Democrats and a number of legal experts have attacked the president's choice as not having the necessary Congressional permission, citing issues under the War Powers Resolution, while many Republicans have backed it.

The U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities have significantly heightened the risk of retaliation from Iran and its regional proxies, with threats potentially targeting both nearby countries and U.S. homeland installations. The situation also raises the likelihood of a broader regional escalation, possibly involving militant groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis, which could spiral into a prolonged and destabilizing conflict. Marking the most direct U.S. military engagement with Iran in decades, these strikes have dramatically altered the strategic landscape of the Middle East.
