Bageshwar is known as the Kashi of Kumaon. Bageshwar district is a district located in the Kumaon division of Uttarakhand state which is an unmatched example of history and natural beauty. History
The city of Bageshwar has a lot of mythological or historical significance. It is believed that the name of this city originated from the Bagnath temple situated here, which is the confluence of the Saryu or Gomti river. Lord Shiva took the form of a tiger at this place, hence the temple is named Bagnath.
Spiritual Significance
According to the Manas section of Shiva Purana, this city was settled by Chandish, the Gan of Shiva. This place is also known as Kashi of Kumaon. King Lakshmi Chand of the Chand dynasty gave a grand look to the temple.
According to the Puranas, in ancient times when Sage Vasishta was bringing Maa Saryu to earth with his hard penance, Rishi Markandeya was engrossed in penance. Due to which the water of the Saryu river started increasing, then Rishi Vasishta worshipped Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva took the form of a tiger or Mother Parvati took the form of a cow to move the water of Saryu forward and to disrupt the penance of Rishi Markandeya. After this, Lord Shiva blessed Rishi Markandeya and Rishi Vasishta. After which Saryu started flowing further.
